Environment and Sustainability

  • Sustainability and environmental compatibility at Daimler

As inventors of the automobile, we are aware of our responsibilities. Sustainable, environmentally compatible mobility is a key part of our corporate strategy. Environmentally viable product design is defined in the Daimler AG environmental guidelines, which account for the entire product life cycle, from initial design to production, product utilisation, disposal and recycling.

After the vehicle utilisation phase, the basis for efficient end-of-life processing is recyclability, which is subject to ongoing improvement. This is an important requirement for efficient re-utilisation and reprocessing of valuable materials by our partners.

When its time to part company from your vehicle, we ask you to return it to a depot within our take-back network. Mercedes-Benz offers a simple, free vehicle return facility, as well as environmentally compatible recycling of your vehicle in compliance with legal requirements. Returning your vehicle and efficient material recycling make a key contribution to completing the recycling cycle and protecting our valuable resources.

  • Returning your vehicle

To make returning your vehicle as easy as possible, Mercedes-Benz offers a comprehensive network of vehicle take-back depots. Returning your vehicle within this network ensures that it is processed in compliance with the law and that valuable materials are recovered for re-use in new products. This makes a valuable contribution to environmental sustainability and enhances resource efficiency.

As the owner of a Mercedes-Benz, you can return your vehicle within the take-back depot network free of charge under the following conditions:

The vehicle is designed for carrying passengers – up to 9 seats – or for transporting goods with a permissible GVW of up to 3.5 tonnes.

The vehicle must have been registered for at least one month in a EU country prior to being taken out of operation.

The end-of-life vehicle must contain no waste and must be complete (drive system, chassis, body, catalytic converter, electronic control units).

After returning the vehicle and registration documents to one of our service partners, you will receive a recycling certificate confirming disposal of your vehicle in compliance with the law. This certificate is generally required by your vehicle registration office before you can de-register the vehicle.

  • Recycling valuable raw materials

Your Mercedes might have seen better days – but it’s nowhere near the end of the road. Cutting-edge recycling technologies are employed to re-utilise the majority of vehicle materials, enabling you to save valuable raw materials and significantly reduce your environmental footprint.

The recycling process can be divided into four steps, which are described below.

    1. Vehicle return
Once you have identified your nearest take-back depot from the list provided, you can return your vehicle in full – without generating any waste.

    2. Drainage
Drainage refers to the removal of all service fluids – such as oil, brake fluid, coolant, windscreen washer fluid and refrigerant – before forwarding them for appropriate recycling and disposal.

    3. Disassembly
The first stage of disassembly is the mandatory removal of battery, oil filter, catalytic converter and wheels before forwarding them for recycling. Pyrotechnic units (e.g. airbags) are disposed of in compliance with legal procedures. This is followed by the removal of parts that can be re-used immediately or after reconditioning.

    4. Shredder
The remaining stripped vehicle is sent to a shredder facility, where it is divided into different material categories and forwarded as far as possible for recycling.
