AMG: The Technology for the Thrill Lovers

AMG - The company from Affalterbach stands worldwide for outstanding engine expertise, which includes not only development, but also the "one man, one engine" philosophy, which means that each engine is, so to speak, hand-crafted by one engine builder. Often, individuals associate Mercedes-Benz vehicles with AMG. It is not exactly the same, AMG is the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. This technology is tuned to upgrade additional power. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 Sedan, for example, has technology centred around 503 horsepower with a V8 engine and a suspension that hugs the road like a lover. AMG simply enhances the thrill of driving. Every AMG engine is crafted by designers and engineers with a single motive: Driving Performance.  These qualities sum up why AMG vehicles are distinguished from ‘other’ vehicles.

The Beginning

There were two men behind these three letters, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher and it all began in 1960 with an overwhelming passion for motorsports. ‘A’ stands for Aufrecht, ‘M’ as in Melcher and ‘G’ is Grossaspach, where they spent their time improving the performance of the engine and also Aufrecht’s birthplace. They believed that every road curve gave an opportunity for more performance and power. This born-to-perform attitude is infused in every single Mercedes-AMG vehicle. They worked in the Development Department at Daimler-Benz and used to work on the 300 SE racing engine until the company discontinued all motorsports activities.

In 1965 they developed a 300 SE engine which was used by a colleague, Manfred Schiek in the German Touring Car Championship. And won ten times! This gave them the reputation as experts. However, Aufrecht wanted to look beyond this reputation and therefore left Mercedes-Benz in 1966. In 1967 together they founded AMG and sold engines for private racing teams. In 1970 they set a benchmark for themselves by modifying a heavy luxury sedan alongside lighter race cars. And the innovation of the engine brought about dynamic results. In the year 1976, Mercedes-AMG signed an agreement and provided their services at certain Mercedes-Benz dealerships, worldwide.

In 1986, Melcher developed an independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder, this innovation gave them the identity as an engine manufacturer. The principle of "one man, one engine" was valid from the outset. The C 36 AMG was the first vehicle to be jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. Further, in 1999, Mercedes-AMG was born as Daimler Chrysler became a 51% owner of AMG.
