The Actros: Robust elegance with sophisticated technology
The new, third-generation Mercedes-Benz Actros, part of the Truck of the Year 2009 family, is even more cost-effective, comfortable, safe and environmentally compatible than before. With an excess of 600,000 units sold in more than 100 countries, the Actros vehicle family has long been one of the biggest success stories in the heavy-duty truck sector - even when operating off-road.

With the New Actros 4841 K, Mercedes-Benz has implemented many individual measures to further enhance its outstandingly engineered best-selling model. Aspects like 'robustness and economy', 'safety' and 'ease of operation' have been further improved in equal measure. Plus a fresh and powerful design further boosts the appeal of the mining Actros.
Design
Tough, practical design is the golden rule of the mining site. It's the golden rule of the Actros too. Each model is fitted with a frame which has been designed to cope with considerably more than the model designation plate would suggest. All frames boast excellent anti-corrosion protection, with catophoretic immersion priming, while features like Huck-Spin fasteners, bayonet locks for electrical connectors, and maintenance-free suspension mounting all help to ensure the robustness and reliability required in heavy duty operation.
Economy
Mining site vehicles are used in all sorts of site applications, but the bottom line is always the same: a new, state-of-the-art truck will be expected to keep on going through thick and thin. It must have a longer working life, it must be able to take more punishment and its maintenance, repair and fuel costs must be kept to a minimum. On the Actros, this is achieved by, for example, the engine's very long, flexible maintenance intervals, robust steel suspension, and automatic axle load compensation. The result? A top-notch profit strategy for the mining industry.
Cab
The well thought-out interior of the Actros satisfies a whole range of driver needs as standard. Comfortable, ergonomically designed seats, the ergonomic cockpit with multifunction steering wheel, and the Telligent gearshift are just some of the features designed to ease the strain of work in the mining industry. And since the applications in this sector are so varied, we provide the right cab for each type of work.
Safety
Avoiding accidents is of paramount importance. And we will go to any length to do so. On paved roads and off. Enhancing both active and passive safety.

A safe, comfortable entrance with grab handles on either side is just as much a part of the safety equipment of the Actros, as the non-splintering, flame-retardant materials used in the vehicle interior. A generously-sized windscreen and deep side windows, together with the mirror system, which includes a front mirror and optimally-placed wide-angle mirrors, afford a good all-round view.

The front under-ride guard and the spray protection on the mudguards contribute to the safety of the other road users, for example, by minimizing the spray mist caused while driving on wet surfaces.
Quality
Durability, robustness, reliability, environmental compatibility, and economy - these are the criteria according to which the Actros is designed, built, and tested again and again.

When it comes to quality, we leave nothing to chance. From the design with modern CAD technology and digital mock-ups, to virtual, computer-simulated tests, and an extremely comprehensive, sophisticated programme of practical tests - every component and every model series has to prove its suitability for daily operation by undergoing strenuous tests. And not just once, but again and again at regular intervals.
Development & Testing
As development work nears completion, every Mercedes is subjected to extreme testing on the "Sauberg" proving grounds in Gaggenau, South-West Germany. But that's only the beginning. When this grueling marathon has been completed, it's on the next round, conducted in the torrid heat of Spain and the freezing cold of Rovaniemi, Finland. There are many intermediate stages too - from engine testing and aggressive corrosion tests to extreme chassis testing - all of them aimed at ensuring the Actros lives up to the promises we make about it. These tests, thousands of kilometers of rough-road testing, and a repeat performance on ordinary roads provide the final proof of quality.
Environment
Environmentally-friendly low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions are not only the result of innovation advanced technology, they are also the result of an attitude that is gradually translating our commitment to more environmental protection into reality in both our product and in production.

Actros is not only among the most economical trucks in mining industry operation, but also among the most environmentally friendly. We are already working on the drive systems of tomorrow - for example; hybrid drive and alternative fuels such as BTL (Biomass to Liquid), the next-generation biodiesel.
